Strong Friend
It
takes a strong Friend, Like a bar that won’t bend
To hold
together the pieces of
a broken heart
that won’t mend
They tried to
tell you
: he’ll
buy and he’ll sell you
But
each time he fell
you were there
by his side
So let
them warn you
. Let them laugh
let them scorn you
You may
be tattered and torn
, but
you’ve still got your pride‘cause
you are a strong friend
, like a bar that
won’t bend
To hold
together the pieces of
a broken heart that won’t
mend
And sometimes you hate
him, And
you can’t tolerate him
‘cause you cant
liberate him
from the demons inside
But you may discover
all his secrets uncovered
In the arms of his lover
,his heart open wide,‘cause he’s got
a strong friend,
like a bar that
won’t bend
To hold
together the pieces of
a broken heart that won`t mend
.
Blue
Cortina
I was
just seventeen when I bought that machine
69 Ford
Cortina the minute I seen her
I just
had to drive her away
Royal
blue lots of chrome
and
vinyl upholstery in grey
I was
just seventeen and I kept her real clean
My old
Ford Cortina smelled of wax and chrome cleaner
You
should have seen her that day
We
drove into the west
with a
full tank and two whole weeks pay
I was
just seventeen living a dream
Load up
that old car with my tent and guitar
And
drive where the sun settles down
When we
passed Kinnegad the
whole world turned the other way round
I was
just seventeen and I should have seen
that
tractor and trailer that came out of nowhere
and
turned my Cortina into a concertina
I cried
as they towed her away.
Royal
blue lots of chrome
and
vinyl upholstery in grey

Aimless
Love (John Prine)
He’s
just a small fry just a bit too gun shy To
have his heart touched without a glove. He
looks at strangers as potential dangers trying
to steal his aimless love. Love
has no mind. It can’t spell unkind. It’s
never seen a heart shaped like a valentine. For
if love knew him, It would walk up to him And
introduce him to an aimless love. I’ve
been out walking, kinda pillow talking To
anyone who has the time for me. It
seems that some folks, they think that love chokes, It
ties and keeps them from being free. Love
has no mind, it can’t spell unkind. It’s
never seen a heart shaped like a valentine. For
if love knew you, it would walk up to you and
introduce you to an aimless love.
Voices
Oh Misery, don’t
pick on me!
I told you once before
That harmony walks home
with me.
Don’t follow me
no more.
Oh tragedy, don t visit me.
I don t have time for you.
Eternity waits patiently,
And you can wait there too.
There are many voices
calling.
Things aren’t how
they’re meant to be.
There are many people
falling down.
Pick them up and set them
free.
Forgiveness, clean up this
mess!
I hoped you’d
come around.
‘cause bitterness
was here I guess.
This time she went to town.
Oh Happiness
here’s my address.
Won’t you stay
for good this time.
‘cause loneliness
has tried her best
To make me lose my mind.
There are many voices
calling.
Things aren’t how
they’re meant to be.
There are many people
falling down.
Pick them up and set them
free.
Small Town
It’s a small town where secrets sleep behind closed doors
where spiders creep
The nights are long and talk is cheap in a small town.
The ladies with their hair in nets, sucking on their cigarettes,
talk with tongues like bayonets, in a small town
Small town
It’s a small town
take a walk round
in a small town
It’s a small town with a quiet street where walls have ears
and dogs have teeth
and the pavement’s cracked beneath your feet. It’s
a small town.
There’s the church and there’s the school.
There’s that no-good drunken fool.
There’s the girl who broke the rule in a small town
Small town
It’s a small town
keep your head down
in a small town
in a town like this one night on earth a teenage girl took her last
breath,
at the virgins feet where she gave birth, in a small town.
a small town with eyes and ears, but no one sees and no one hears
and the concrete statue cried real tears.
in a small town.
Butterflies and Moths
Did you have butterflies in your eyes when you opened them
until you realized to your surprise you were hipnotized?
How could you think that she was the one?
Its hard to mistake the moon for the sun
Was the light so bright in the dark of night that you lost your sight?
Did you feel the pain, turn away and then fly right back
again
Did you still believe that she was the one
as you watched her leave in the cold morning sun?
Did you have butterflies in your eyes when you opened them?
And now the moths are gone with the light of dawn
will you carry on Believing?
My Time Is Not My Own
Standing at the station on platform number nine
That train is right on time Its comin’ down the line
It pulls in with a groan. My time is not my own
Staring out the window, Jesus what a sight
left over from last night . There must have been a fight
I close my eyes and moan. My time is not my own
And later at the office I sit back and close my eyes
and dream of Paradise. I’ve been there once or twice
I tell my Dictaphone : My time is not my own
The wolf outside my door
Is coming back for more
I’m gonna wake up sunday morning, I might just disappear
Become a mountaineer, Get far away from here .
…don’t forget your phone ‘cause your
time is not your own
your time is not your own . you’ve got to pay your loan
your time is not your own
The wolf outside your door
Is coming back for more…
Down By The Lake
When I wake up with trouble on my mind
and I need a place to leave it all behind
There is somewhere I know that I can go
A secret place that no-one else will know
I can hear the gentle summer breeze
Softly whisper through the willow leaves
The water lapping gently on the stones
this is where I rest my weary bones
Down by the Lake beneath the trees
All my happy memories
I can feel the warm sun on my face
I could stay forever in this place
But I can only go there in my dreams
Cos on the shore they built a housing scheme
Down by the lake beneath the trees
All my happy memories
Back
Home To You
I have stared into this glass for far too long
I know the words to every country song
Got to find a different point of view
Got to find my way back home to you
I’ve been in & out of every bar in town
Stayed to watched the shutters coming down
Never met a soul who ever knew
How to find my way back home to you
Back home to you
That’s all I gotta do
Got to find my way back home to you
Troubled waters can be hard to navigate
Turn this ship around before it gets too late
Calling on the captain & the crew
To chart a course and sail back home to you
I’ve thought it through
Back home to you
Time to give myself a talking to
Time to find my way back home to you
Monsters
Lay
down your head on the pillow my son.
Close
your eyes tightly my darling young one.
Think
of your mammy and think of your dad.
we`ll stay while you`re sleeping so dont look so sad.
Close
up the windows theres
monsters outside
Bolt up
the shutters and turn out the light
You can
hear the cold wind blow this dark rainy night
but
we’re all wrapped up here so we`ll
be alright.
Oh for
the thoughts in your sweet little head
as you
lie peacefully there in your bed.
Oh for
the innocent mind of a child,
to
sleep and to dream without thoughts running wild
Fifteen Years Ago (Raymond A Smith)
I
saw a man today who said he talked to you
Not so long ago I think a month or two
As my mind raced back in time
I prayed oh Lord don't let it show
He thinks I forgot you fifteen years ago
Fifteen years ago and I still feel the same
Why did he have to mention your name
I'm as broken up inside as if it's been a week or so
I takes a mighty strong love to keep a man thinking of
A girl he hasn't seen since fifteen years ago
I've got a lovely wife who thinks the world of me
Promised her my love through all eternity
I've tried hard to make her happy and so far she doesn't know
I can't shake this thing of fifteen years ago
Fifteen years ago and I still feel the same
Why did he have to mention your name
I'm as broken up inside as if it's been a week or so
It takes a mighty long time to get a real love off your mind
I know I've tried since fifteen years ago
Right
Now
I don’t want to worry about the future
I’m not one for living in the past
I might be gone tomorrow but I’m here today
I just want to make the moment last
I want to do it right now
I want to do it Today
I want to do it right now
I don’t care what people say
Every day we get a little older
Every day we take a little time
Every day the weathers getting colder
To waste another day would be a crime
I want to do it right now
I want to do it today
I want to do it right now
I don’t care what people say
They can talk their time away
The sun is up its time to play
I gotta go now I cant stay.
